RIGHTS-NIGERIA: “People Always See Us As Health Hazards”

Sam Olukoya

LAGOS, Nov 8 2006 (IPS) – When I go home, I often notice that as soon as I come, all the towels, soaps and sponges that were in the bathroom will disappear, says Isaiah Ojeabulu. He chairs the Human Rights Association of Persons Affected by Leprosy, an organisation in Nigeria, and has himself suffered from leprosy.
Ojeabulu has similar tales from his earlier years. He says discrimination against him started from the moment that he contracted leprosy, a year before he finished secondary school, developing a leg ulcer that attracted flies.

All my friends deserted me. I felt a sense of loneliness because the other students would move to another part of the classroom. The shame would sometimes force me to leave the classroom, he told IPS.

HEALTH-VIETNAM: Winter Vigilance Against Bird Flu

Sonny Inbaraj

HANOI, Dec 4 2006 (IPS) – For poultry farmer Tuan Thom, the onset of winter calls for extra vigilance against bird flu. And he is not letting his guard down though avian influenza has claimed no human victim in Vietnam during the past 12 months, nor have there been any poultry outbreaks.
In his poultry farm at Ha Nam district s Hung Cong commune 80 kilometres south of the capital where he rears 1,500 ducks and 1,000 chickens, Tuan is constantly on the lookout for migratory birds that might mingle with his domestic flock.

Winter is the time when migratory birds from Russia, China and Mongolia fly through Vietnam on their way to the warmer south. These birds carry the bird flu virus, Tuan told IPS.

Gesticulating menacingly, the farmer said: I have…

DEVELOPMENT-TANZANIA: Sachs Says It Is Possible to Meet MDGs

Stephanie Nieuwoudt

NAIROBI, Jan 22 2007 (IPS) – World renowned economist and director of the United Nations (UN) Millennium Project, Jeffrey Sachs, is a harbinger of good news. During his visit to Nairobi, capital of Kenya, in mid-January he emphasised that it was still possible to meet the MDGs before 2015.
We can still achieve the Millennium Development Goals if proper use is made of the powerful tools at our disposal. But two things are necessary: sustained partnerships between governments and civil society and sustained donor resource input .

UN secretary general Kofi Annan commissioned the Millennium Project to develop an action plan against poverty under Sachs leadership.

There has been a scaling up of donor investment in the key areas of agriculture, …

JAPAN: GM Soya for Biofuel – Boon for Organic Farmers

Suvendrini Kakuchi

TOKYO, Feb 16 2007 (IPS) – Plans in the United States to boost ethanol fuel production using genetically modified (GM) soybeans has raised cautious hopes among local farmers involved in organically grown crops as well as environmental and consumer groups.
Global warming has promoted biofuel production using GM soybeans in the U.S. We want to use this opportunity to increase the domestic production of organic soybeans for food, said Yoko Tomiyama, spokesperson for the influential Japan Consumer Association.

Tomiyama was referring to the recent alarm in Japan over the expected decline in soybean supply from the U.S. where farmers now prefer to grow cheaper, pest resistant GM soybeans for biofuels that can produce environmentally safe energy.

G8: Poverty Reduction and Climate Change Inextricably Linked, Say Activists

Moyiga Nduru

JOHANNESBURG, Jun 5 2007 (IPS) – In the final hours before this week s Group of Eight (G8) summit gets underway in Germany, activists have underscored the need for progress with both climate change and poverty alleviation key items on the meeting s agenda for there to be real improvement in Africa s living conditions.
If the threat of climate change is not removed, it will wipe out all efforts to help the poor through commitments such as aid, said Ciara O Sullivan, media co-ordinator for the Global Call to Action Against Poverty an international coalition grouping civic organisations from over 100 countries.

The G8 comprises the world s major industrialised nations: Britain, Canada, France, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United States and Germany, hosting the…
